The first beginnings of things cannot be distinguished by the eye. (Lucretius)
“I love beginnings,” my daughter said to me recently. “You can start everything from zero, design it the way you want.” It did surprise me a little. Having had to move a lot during her studies and always starting part-time jobs, I thought, she would appreciate some permanence. Is it me then? Have I got too comfortable in my space? Too tired after moving countries several times when you are forced to start everything from scratch? Have I got caught up in getting things right instead of enjoying them more?
With the spring all around, you cannot help noticing how everything is fresh and new, trees are in bloom, new grass shoots out and there is this promise of something exciting and cheerful in the air. Every spring, there are new blossoms on the trees, but the tree has no certainty they will lead to fruit. Storms might come, or night frosts and the fruit might never see the light of the day.
How often are we so focused on the outcome, that we don’t start anything if we are not sure about the end? You do not start that course because what if you will have to move and will not finish it? You will not go to the gym, because you probably won’t lose those 7 pounds anyway. You do not start writing that book… Sounds familiar? I know I think like this sometimes. But what if the journey led us to something we cannot foresee at the moment? What if walking down that path was exciting in itself? What if we just said YES to something new that is coming our way, without knowing how the dots will connect?
With all this in mind, I am starting this blog. Opening a space for sharing, for conversation, for inspiration. For growing, for fun. This, too, is a dot in a line which started who knows where. When I first thought about writing a blog? When I read my first book? And who can say where it will take us? But let’s get talking. What are you beginning right now? Next month? This year? And how do you feel about it?
